reimagining fort ellewoutsdijk
zeeland, the netherlands [2011]

The main goals of the intervention are to preserve and enhance the unique historical and ecological qualities of the building and site through restoration and modification, as well as integrating new and dynamic programming along with a sensitive approach to the natural environment. The fort functions as a node, providing better connections to the village of Ellewoutsdijk and the waterfront and becomes a place of interest as part of a larger regional recreational and ecological system. Strengthening the idea of views as part of the “accessibility” of site, vantage points are provided for tourists and residents for bird watching, ecological and educational purposes.
